Description

This is a rare Eskimo / Inuit / Yupik… Shaman’s Amulet – dates from the early to mid 19th century (1800 – 1850s).
This figure would’ve served as a pendant for a Bering Sea / Aleutian Islands shaman’s necklace…… alternatively, it could’ve been used as a single ancestor amulet on an Aleut Hunter’s helmet or visor (perhaps a variant of the better known sitting figure charms) — see photo #6
Material is either (Odobenus Rosmarsus)….or…..(Physeter Macrocephalaus) — I believe it’s the latter on account of the absence of any crystalline / marbled secondary dentine areas……which are typically visible on quite a lot of 19th century amulets from these parts of the sub Arctic / Bering Sea….Human ancestor figures amulet/charms are rarer….
Measures about 2.5 inches in length…….
small, but very powerful !!!!!
Condition-wise, it’s very good save for some scratches here and there and a few age cracks (normal)…….Look much better in person!
